Funktion-One: The Story Behind the Purple Speakers That Shaped Club Sound
Most producers have stood in front of a Funktion-One system without knowing it. You walk into a proper club (Berghain, or one of the better venues at Amsterdam Dance Event each October) and there they are. Purple cabinets. Silver waveguides that look like polished axes. A wide, spacious soundstage that puts your track right in the middle of the room instead of beating you over the head with it.
The name doesn’t flash across the front like a car badge, but the sound tells you everything. Clean sub-bass that stays tight even when the room is packed. Mids that reveal every decision you made in your mix (the good ones and the embarrassing ones). Highs that cut without the ice-pick harshness you get from cheaper horn systems.
This is the result of a 30-year design philosophy that runs counter to almost everything happening in modern pro audio. While the rest of the industry chases line arrays, DSP correction, and maximum SPL ratings, Funktion-One still builds point-source horn-loaded cabinets the way Tony Andrews did when the company started in 1992.
The approach is old-fashioned by current standards. It also works.
Before Funktion-One: The Turbosound Years
Tony Andrews didn’t start with club sound. He co-founded Turbosound in 1978 with John Newsham and Tim Isaac, building festival systems for outdoor stages. The TMS-3 became a fixture at Glastonbury through the 1980s, followed by the Flashlight and Floodlight systems that handled everything from rock tours to outdoor raves.
Turbosound built its reputation on efficiency and intelligibility. Getting clear sound to large outdoor crowds without simply brute-forcing it with amplifier power. Andrews and Newsham were solving acoustic problems with cabinet design and horn geometry, not throwing more watts at the issue.
Turbosound was eventually sold to Harman Professional. Andrews and Newsham left in 1992 and started over.
1992: Founding Funktion-One
Funktion-One was founded in Dorking, Surrey, England. A small workshop, two guys who had already built a successful loudspeaker company, and a new set of design goals. The target wasn’t festival stages this time. It was dance music venues, where the sound system runs all night, where bass needs to stay clean at sustained high levels, and where the audience stands inside the sound field instead of watching from a distance.
They spent eight years on research and development before shipping a major project.
Eight years.
No investor would tolerate that now, but Andrews and Newsham weren’t interested in getting a product to market quickly. They were reworking the entire approach to club sound.
The first big install was the Millennium Dome’s central show in London in 2000. A massive temporary venue, a high-profile gig, and proof that the system could deliver. From there, the brand moved into clubs.
The Design Philosophy
Funktion-One’s approach comes down to four core principles, and all of them run against current trends in professional audio.
Point-source design instead of line arrays. A point-source system radiates sound from a single point in space (or as close to a single point as physics allows). Line arrays stack multiple drivers vertically to create a wavefront that stays coherent over long distances, which works well for stadiums and large outdoor stages. Point-source works better for club rooms where the goal is to create an even sound field throughout the space.
When you’re standing in front of a Funktion-One system, the sound feels wide and spacious. You can move around the room and the stereo image stays stable. That’s the point-source advantage. It creates a soundstage instead of a beam.
Fully horn-loaded cabinets. The mid and high drivers sit behind horns, and most of the bass enclosures are horn-loaded too. This increases efficiency dramatically. A horn-loaded driver moves less air to produce the same output level, which means the amplifier works less hard, which means less distortion at high volume.
High efficiency also means headroom. The system isn’t fighting to stay clean when the kick hits.
Acoustic solutions over digital processing. Most modern systems lean heavily on DSP to correct problems: room modes, phase issues, driver mismatches. Funktion-One solves those problems mechanically and acoustically. The cabinet geometry, horn design, and driver placement are engineered to minimize phase issues and frequency response irregularities before the signal even reaches an amplifier.
The result is a system that sounds like itself, not like a heavily processed version of itself. Some people love that. Some people want more correction. Andrews clearly falls into the first camp.
Natural, honest sound instead of maximum loudness. The goal isn’t to be the loudest system on the market. The system doesn’t flatter your mix. It shows you what’s actually there.
That’s a problem if your mix has issues.
It’s an advantage if your mix is clean.
The Systems People Know
The Resolution series was Funktion-One’s first product line, aimed at club installs. The compact Resolution 2 became a standard mid/high cabinet for small and medium rooms, with the larger Resolution 5 covering bigger spaces and touring.
The Dance Stack took that concept and scaled it up. This is the configuration most people know: large horn-loaded mid/high cabinets stacked above horn-loaded bass bins, with separate horn-loaded subwoofers handling the bottom end. The Dance Stack became the blueprint for serious club installs through the 2000s.
The Evolution (Evo) series reworked the Dance Stack design with updated components and geometry. The Evo 6EH and Evo 6SH mid/high units replaced the older Resolution cabinets in many installs, offering better pattern control and slightly smoother response.
The Vero system, launched in 2015, was Funktion-One’s answer to modern touring requirements. It debuted at Glastonbury and gave the company a system that could compete with line arrays in large-scale applications while maintaining the point-source philosophy. The smaller Vero VX brought that design down to mid-sized venues.
The Venues
Berghain in Berlin installed a Funktion-One Dance Stack system in 2005. That system ran for around 18 years before the club upgraded to a newer Funktion-One setup. If you’ve heard techno in Berghain, you’ve heard a Funktion-One system doing what it’s designed to do. Delivering clean, punishing bass and revealing every flaw in the production.
Space in Ibiza started with Funktion-One on its Terrace in 2002 after a recommendation from promoter Darren Hughes, then rolled the system out to most of the club. Output in Brooklyn and Cielo in New York are also well-known installs.
The brand isn’t everywhere, but when a club installs Funktion-One, it’s usually a statement about priorities. Clean sound over maximum volume. Acoustic engineering over digital correction. A sound that reveals the production instead of masking it.
What It Means for Producers
A horn-loaded point-source club system exposes problems that your studio monitors and earbuds don’t.
Low-mid mud becomes obvious. That buildup between 200 and 400 Hz that sounds fine in your headphones? It turns into a boomy mess on a horn-loaded system. Keep your low-mids clean. High-pass everything that doesn’t need to be there. Use a spectrum analyzer to check for buildup, then cut it.
Harsh 2-5 kHz content will hurt. Horn systems are efficient in the upper mids, which means harsh transients and resonant peaks in that range come through louder than you expect. If your clap or snare has a piercing quality on a Funktion-One system, it’s probably sitting around 3-4 kHz with too much energy.
Pull it back. A little goes a long way.
Sloppy sub-bass gets exposed. Sub-bass needs to be clean and mono. If your kick and bassline are fighting for space below 60 Hz, you’ll hear it immediately on a system with horn-loaded subs. Side-chain compression helps, but better is simply cleaning up the arrangement so only one element owns the sub range at any given moment.
Headroom matters. These systems reveal clipping and over-limiting in a way that cheaper systems don’t. If you’re smashing your master bus limiter to hit -6 LUFS, you’re going to hear the distortion on a Funktion-One rig.
Leave headroom. Aim for -9 to -12 LUFS for club tracks and let the system do the work.

Where the Company Stands Today
Funktion-One is still independent. Still based in Dorking. John Newsham retired, but Tony Andrews remains the public voice of the brand’s philosophy, still advocating for acoustic solutions and high-efficiency design in an industry that has largely moved toward DSP-corrected line arrays and maximum SPL. The company hasn’t chased trends. It hasn’t pivoted to powered speakers with built-in DSP. It still builds passive horn-loaded cabinets that require external amplification and careful tuning. That approach is out of step with where the pro audio industry has gone.
Which is exactly why it still matters.
Most modern systems sound good because the DSP corrects the problems. Funktion-One systems sound good because the problems were solved before the signal reached the amplifier. One approach is faster to deploy. The other approach is harder to beat when it’s done right.
