ADE 2026 Travel Logistics: Trains, Trams, and Taxis for Producers
Amsterdam’s public transport system works brilliantly, until you’re trying to get from Gashouder to Warehouse Elementenstraat at 3 AM with 40,000 other people doing the same thing. ADE week turns Amsterdam’s usually efficient transport into a tactical puzzle. Here’s how to solve it.
The GVB Pass Decision
Buy the multi-day GVB pass. Period.
A 7-day pass costs around €42 and covers all trams, buses, and metro within Amsterdam. You’ll use it constantly. Single trips cost €3.40 each, which adds up fast when you’re hitting 4-5 venues per day plus getting to conference locations.
The pass doesn’t cover trains to Amsterdam Central from Schiphol Airport, that’s a separate €5.50 ticket. But once you’re in the city, the GVB pass handles everything except taxis and ride-shares.
Load it on your phone through the GVB app or grab a physical card at Schiphol or any metro station. The app works fine, but keep a backup battery pack. Nothing worse than a dead phone when you’re trying to board a night bus at 2 AM.
Conference Venue Routes
Most ADE conference sessions happen in a tight cluster: DeLaMar Theater, Felix Meritis, Beurs van Berlage, and the surrounding venues are all within walking distance of each other in the city center.
From Amsterdam Central Station to this conference cluster: Tram 2, 11, or 12. Takes 8-10 minutes. Trams run every 5-7 minutes during the day.
The outlier is Amsterdam RAI, which hosts some larger conference sessions and the ADE Sound Lab. From Central: take Metro 52 (North-South line) directly to Station RAI. 15 minutes. This metro line opened in 2018 and changed the game for getting to RAI,no more tram transfers.
Real timing: Allow 30 minutes between conference sessions if they’re in different buildings. 45 minutes if one’s at RAI. The sessions themselves run tight on schedule, but Amsterdam’s narrow streets get jammed during ADE week.
Showcase Venue Clusters
ADE showcases spread across the city, but they cluster into rough zones. Understanding this saves hours.
Eastern Venues (Gashouder, Warehouse Elementenstraat, Shelter): These are your late-night techno spots. From Central Station, take Tram 7 or 26 to the eastern docklands area. Tram 26 runs 24/7 during ADE week. Travel time: 20-25 minutes.
Western/Noord Venues (NDSM, Pllek, other Noord locations): These require the free ferry from Central Station. The NDSM ferry runs every 15 minutes, takes 15 minutes to cross. Last ferry around 12:30 AM normally, but extended hours during ADE. Check the schedule or you’re stuck with a €40 taxi ride around the water.
Center/South Venues (Melkweg, Paradiso, De School, Radion): These are more accessible. Melkweg and Paradiso are walking distance from each other. De School and Radion are south, take Tram 4 or metro to Zuid station area.
The 3 AM Problem
Here’s what nobody tells you: between 1-4 AM during ADE week, regular trams slow to a crawl or stop running certain routes. Night buses take over, but they’re packed and slower.
Night Bus Routes That Matter: - N87: Runs through the eastern docklands (Gashouder direction) - N89: Covers the southern route (Radion/De School area) - N97: Goes to Noord via road (when ferries stop)
These run every 30 minutes. They’re crowded as hell. Factor in 45 minutes minimum for any cross-city trip after 2 AM.
The honest solution? If you’re venue-hopping late night, budget for taxis or ride-shares for at least 2-3 trips during the week. Some battles aren’t worth fighting.
Taxi Apps That Actually Work
Uber: Works in Amsterdam, but surge pricing during ADE is brutal. 3x normal rates after midnight is standard. A €15 trip becomes €45.
Bolt: Cheaper than Uber, same concept. Slightly fewer drivers, so wait times can be longer.
TCA Taxi: Local Amsterdam taxi service with an app. Fixed meter rates (no surge pricing), but you’ll wait 15-20 minutes for pickup during peak hours. Book ahead if possible.
Free Now (formerly MyTaxi): Another local option. Prices sit between Uber surge and TCA normal rates.
For trips between distant venues late-night, expect €25-40. Split it with other producers heading the same direction. Chat people up at venues, someone’s always going your way.
The Bicycle Solution
Amsterdam runs on bikes. Renting one for the week costs €40-60 and solves the venue-hopping problem completely.
Where to rent: MacBike, Black Bikes, or Donkey Republic (app-based). All have locations near Central Station.
Biking from city center to Gashouder: 18 minutes. To Radion: 22 minutes. You’ll beat taxis during evening hours.
The catch: You need to be comfortable biking in heavy traffic, in the dark, possibly slightly drunk. Amsterdam bike culture moves fast and doesn’t tolerate tourists wobbling around. Also, bike theft is real, always use the provided locks.
If you’re confident on a bike, it’s the best solution. If you’re not, don’t learn during ADE week.
Hotel Location Strategy
Stay near a major tram line or metro stop. Specifically:
Tram 2, 11, or 12 routes: Direct access to conference venues Metro 52 (North-South line): Fast access to RAI and southern venues Walking distance to Central Station: Gives you access to everything, including night buses and ferries
Avoid staying in Noord unless you’re okay with ferry dependency. Avoid the far south unless you’re specifically targeting RAI events.
The Jordaan and De Pijp neighborhoods offer good tram access and reasonable hotel prices. Centrum hotels cost more but save transport time.
What to Do Today
Download the GVB app now and load a 7-day pass when you arrive. Screenshot the night bus map from the GVB website, you’ll reference it at 3 AM when your phone’s dying.
Map out your must-see showcases and check which zone they’re in. If you’re hitting 3+ eastern venues, consider staying in that area one night to avoid the cross-city schlep.
Install Bolt and Free Now alongside Uber. More options means better prices and faster pickups.
And honestly? Accept that you’ll spend €150-200 on transport during ADE week. Budget for it now rather than stressing about every tram ride later. Amsterdam’s compact, but ADE spreads you thin. The goal is hearing great music and making connections, not optimizing every journey to save €3.
